January 14, 2026: In the first Nordic race of the season at Black Mountain, local high school racers competed in a 5k Freestyle race. The racers competed on the Paul's 5k (4960m) in the legendary John Roderick Trail System, which was the course used in the 2025 Sassi Memorial. Leavitt High School's Haley Marston won the women's race with a time of 18:06.8. 
Coming in second place was Elsie Pinchbeck of Camden Hills with a time of 18:08.3. Third place went to Liz Buckley of Leavitt, who crossed the line in 18:20.5.
The Leavitt men swept the podium in the men's race, with senior Damon Rucci taking top honors with a time of 14:32. Second place went to teammate Serhii Bezhenar who finished in 15:06.0. Taking third place was Trent Sibley, who broke the beam at the 16:26.0 mark.
The next high school Nordic race at Black Mountain will be the Sassi Memorial 5k Classical on January 31st.
