Maine Junior Ski League Class A
2015 Skiing Championships
The Farmington Area Boys and Girls Ski Teams each claimed 2015 Maine Junior Ski League Overall Championships during the Day 2 Competition at Black Mountain Ski Resort in Rumford on Saturday, February 14th. It was the boys nordic team, led by 3K Classical Gold Medalist Dominic Giampietro, who dominated the field to lead the Famington boys to victory.
FAST took all three podium positions in Saturday's classical event with Sam Smith and Mick Gurney finishing second and third respectively. Smith, who as a skimeister competes in both nordic and alpine events, had won the nordic freestyle on Day 1 of the competition at Spruce Mountain in Jay on February 11th. The young skier finished 2nd in the Giant Slalom at Black, which was won by Luke Kearing of the Sugarloaf Area Ski Team. Maguire Anuszewski, skiing for POND, finished 3rd in the GS. Smith had also won the Slalom race at Spruce, with Kearing taking the silver and Camden's Michael Frampton winning the bronze. Other medalists in the freestyle race were Giampietro with the silver and Bryce Trefethen of Maranacook with the bronze. The Maranacook boys finished second and Auburn was third. FAST was also the Alpine and Nordic team champions.
In the girls' competition, in was the Farmington Area's strength in the Alpine races that led them to the overall team championship. Camden, which only fields an alpine team, took home the Alpine Team Championship and the Bethel Outing Club, competing only in nordic events, won the Nordic Team Championship. But it was the balance of FAST that earned them the overall title. Maranacook finish second and Spruce Mountain was third in overall competition.
Vika Santoro of Camden won Saturday's Giant Slalom while Jenna Hanrahan of FAST was second and Julia Pomeroy of Spruce finished third. The Bethel Outing Club took four of the top six spots in the nordic classical race on Saturday with Livy Clarke taking the gold and teammate Lilo Bean winning the silver. Mt. Ararat's Jenny Wilbraham won the bronze. At Spruce Mountain on Day 1, it was Wilbraham taking gold, withMia Shifrin of BOC taking the silver. Teammate Clarke took the final podium spot. In the Slalom at Spruce, it was Hanrahan who had the fastest times, while Pomeroy was second and Santoro third.
