Orono High School's Ruth White captured the Mountain Valley Confenence Nordic Classical Championship at Sugarloaf Outdoor Center on February 10th. On a day that proved challenging for waxing, White completed the 5k course in 20:37, more than three minutes ahead of the next skier. Emily Kidd of the Mt. Abram Roadrunners was second across the finish line with a time of 23:57.4. The final skier to qualify for a podium spot was Kidd's teammate Autumn Pulk, who has a time of 24:11.0. Finishing in fourth place was Orono's Megan Gerbi (24:11.0), with Ella Allan-Rahill of Orono (26:24.9) and Ella Akers of Telstar (27:08.2) rounding out the top six.

In the men's race Abrahm Geissinger of the Spruce Mountain Phoenix took top honors with a time of 17:15.1. Second place went to Mt. Abram's Alex Hemingway, who crossed the finish line in 17:17.0. Kyle McClellen of Orono took third, striding to the finish in a time of 18:56.0. Rounding out the top six were Cam Walters of Mt. Abram (18:59.5), teammate Jeff Warnock (19:59.0) and Orono's Tommy Owen (20:19.4).

The Orono girls and the Mt Abram boys take the lead after day 1.  The MVC Nordic Championships conclude on Satureay at Titcomb Mtn with the freestyle pursuit.

KVAC Logo 2018 100In the Women's Kennebec Valley Athletic Conferences Alpine Championships, Camden Hills Zola RobertsZola Roberts GS 360 was fastest on the hill in the Giant Slalom. Roberts attacked the 203 meter vertical drop course at Black Mountain with times of 1:00.69 and :59.09 for a two-run total of 1:59.78. Finishing in second was Leavitt Hornet standout Sophie Simard with runs of 1:00.42 and :59.38 for a total of 1:59.80. Mt. Blues Sadie McDonough took the final podium spot with times of :59.90 and 1:00.28 for a 2:00.18 total.

Rounding out the top 6 wereKatie Yeaton of Mt. Blue (2:02.61), Lily Stowe of Camden Hills (2:02.97), and Oxford Hills' Elizabeth Dieterich (2:03.10).

KVAC Logo 2018 100The men's Kennebec Valley Athletic Conferences Alpine Championships Josh Smith GS 360kicked on on February 9th at Black Mountain in Rumford, and Mt. Blue's Josh Smith found the giant slalom course to his liking, winning a close day of racing with times of :58.17 and :57.47 for a two-run total of 1:55.64. Less than .08 seconds behind Smith was Maranacook's Sam Mckee, who with his time of 58.87 and 56.85 had a total of 1:55.72. Third place went to Camhen Hills' Roger Huguet with runs of :58.37 and :57.72 for a total of 1:56.09. Just missing the podium, but racing very well was Camden's Harc Huguet (1:57.42), Thatcheer Riley of Maranacook (1:59.34) and Oxford Hills' Nick Bancroft (1:1:59.13.

Maranacook leads Mt. Blue by 6 points in the team standings. Below are the complete team standings after the first day of competition:

2018 mvc round logo 100Mountain Valley's Jaden Boulanger opened up the 2022 Mountain Valley Skiing ChampionshipsJaden Boulanger GS 360 with a gold medal performance in the Giant Slalom at Black Mountain of Maine in Rumford on February 9th. The Falcon skier crossed the finish line with runs of :58.94 and :57.35 for a two-run total of 1:56.29. Taking silver was Rangeley's Amelia Stokes, who had runs of 1:00.45 and :59.33 for a 1:59.78 total. Winning bronze was Stokes teammate Breezy Quimby with runs of 1:01.40 and 1:00.54, giving her a score of 2:01.93. Also finishing in the top 6 were Mae Hoff of Telstar (2:04.14), Jocelyn Nivus of Telstar (2:07.37), and Rangeley's Natalie Stokes (2:08.47).

The Rangeley girls took the early lead in the team alpine standings with a total of 785.0 points. Telstar was second with 779 points followed by Mountain Valley with 762 points. Spruce Mountain (189), Mt. Abram (187), and Dirigo (185) rounded out the results from the first day. Day 2 of the competition will be held on Saturday,  February 12th at Titcomb Mountain in Farmington.

Volunteers:         Each School must provide one Gate Keeper or Course Worker for both Alpine Events. If a school cannot supply a worker, they must notify Chad Brackett or Brant Remington (713-6603) by noon on Sunday, Feb. 6th, and pay a $100 fee so a replacement keeper can be scheduled. Skiing volunteers will be issued a Lift Pass as needed.

Amenities:           The main lodge will be open for restroom use and the Snack Bar will be open throughout the day.

 

 

2018 mvc round logo 100Charlie Pye, skiing for the Mt. Abram Roadrunners, took first place in the 2022 Mountain Valley ConferenceCharlie Pye GS 360 Giant Slalom Championship at Black Mountain. Pye completed the drop in times of 1:00.71 and :59.38 for a two-run total time of 2:00.09 to take the gold. Right behind him was Joel Tardiff of Mountain Valley, who had times of :89.93 and 1:00.48 for a total of 2:00.39, just 3/10 of a second behind Pye. The final podium position was captured by Daxxtyn Williams, skiing for the Rangeley Lakers. He had times of 1:04.51 and 1:05.03 for a total of 2:09.54. Other top finishers were Pye's teammate Ian Allen (2:12.69), Winthrop's Jaxon August (2:12.74), and Mt. Abram's Aden Richards (2:17.15).

With the strong performances, the Roadrunners lead the Alpine Team Standings with 785 points. The Falcons of Mountain Valley are in second with 772 points, with Rangeley (389) and Winthrop (384) rounding out the team scores.
