The Maranacook girls and boys teams took the leads in the Kennebec Valley Athletic Conference's first day of nordic competition at Black Mountain of Maine on Friday, February 8th. The individual winner for the girls was Meghan Charles of Mt. Blue High School, who grabbed the gold in the 5K Nordic Classical race with a time of :19:01.3. Laura Parent led the charge for Maranacook with a silver medal finish of :19:49.1. Taking the final podium spot was Mt. Ararat's Karlie Leighton with a time of :20:17.1.
Other top 10 girl finishers were Maddie Taylor of Maranacook, Gretchen Huish of Mt. Blue, Maura Taylor of Maranacook, Chelsea Seabold of Mt. Blue, Hajna Nagy of Maranacook, Leavitt's Tamra Benson, and Mt. Blue's Zoe Huish.
Roy Varney of Leavitt High School took the gold in the boys' race with a time of :16:08.0. He was followed by Mark McLaughlin of Maranacook, who finished in :16:33.3. McLaughlin's teammate Luke Bartol won the bronze medal with a time of :16:38.7. Maranacook also took the next two spots with Gabe Fein and Carter McPhedran coming in 4th and 5th respectively. Rounding out the top ten were Sam Stinson of Mt. Blue, Cameron Bancroft of Oxford Hills, Dominic Giampietro, Mick Gurney, and Jesse Dalton, all from Mt. Blue.
Team scores after Day 1 had Maracook girls leading with 20 points. Mt. Blue was right on their tails with 23 points, followed by Leavitt with 59 points. In the boys team standings, Marancook has the lead with 14 points, with Mt. Blue in 2nd place with 33 points, and Leavitt in 3rd with 50 points. Competition continues at Titcomb Mountain on Friday.
