Julia Pomerroy was victorious in the season's first women's alpine race under the lights at Black Mountain on January 4th. The Spruce Mountain senior had runs of 35.28 and 37.76 for a two-run total of 1:13.04 to win the highly contested Giant Slalom race, which had 84 skiers. Hampden Academy's Ana Baldwin finished in second with a two-run total of 1:13.95, with Edward Little's Jordan Cummings right behind her at 1:13.97.

Katie Ide of Maranacook took fourth with a score of 1:14.00, Abbie Tyler of John Bapst was fifth, and Mt. Abram sophomore Alice MacKay was sixth.

Maranacook took top team honors for the girls with 767 points, followed by Rangeley with 736 points, and Spruce Mountain with 713.

In the boys race, Mt. Blue senior Sam Smith bested a field of 100 skiers to capture the win in the GS with runs of 32.86 and 33.82 (1:06.70). Finishing in second place was Colby Vandecker of Oxford Hills. The Viking junior had a total of 1:07.60. He was followed by Winthrop's lone skier, Maguire Anuszewski, who finished with 1:08.15.

Fourth place went to Tommy Bancroft of Oxford Hills (1:09.31). Rounding out the top six were a couple of sophomores, Jacob Tyler of John Bapst (1:10.28) and Mt. Blue's Jack Kearing (1:10.55).

Oxford Hills topped the boys' team scores with 780 points. The Cougars of Mt. Blue were second with 765 points and Maranacook finished in third with 740 points.

Riley Jerome Charlie Pye

Black Mountain of Maine opened up its 2019 Alpine Racing Season with a Middle School Giant Slalom on Jaunuary 3rd. Riley Jerome of Telstar came in first place with a two-run total of 1:15.49. Second place went to Mountain Valley's Jaden Boulanger with a combined time of 1:20.03. 3rd place went to Rosie St. Cyr of the Chisholm Alpine Race Team. Her time was 1:21.13. Other top 6 finishers were Breezy Quimby of Rangeley, Gigi Divivo of Telstar, and Amelai Stokes of Rangeley.

In the boys race, Rangeley's Charlie Pye captured gold with a combined time of 1:14.89. Coming in second place was Conner Brann of Lost Valley at 1:18.74, with Auburn Middle School's Ellis Slover taking third with a 1:18.86 score. Other top finishers were Thatcher Riley and Scottie Turney of Chisholm, and Rangeley's Tucker MacFawn.

In the first Nordic ski race of 2019 at Black Mountain Ski Resort, Falmouth made it a clean sweep with victories in the boys and girls 5k Freestyle on January 2nd. In the boys race, Ethan Livingwood took top honors for the Yachtmen with a time of 12:36.0. Finishing in second place was Roy Varney of Leavitt with a time of 12:41.6. Third place went to Nate Livingwood of Falmouth, who completed the course in 13:16.3. Rounding out the top 6 were Martin Horn (Freeport), Ben Rooks (Falmouth), and Vance Boyd (Flamouth).

Falmouth took top team honors with 789 points, with Freeport finishing second with 752 points.

In the girls race, the Yachtmen's Eva Clement took first place for Falmouth, crossing the finish line in 14:49.6. Right behind her was Emily Gerencer of St. Doms with a time of 15:27.2. Eliza Skillings of Maine Coast Waldorf finished in third place, completing the skate race in 16:01.0. Other top finishers were Karli Leighton (Mt. Ararat), Jaldyn Negley (Leavitt), and Allison Greuel (Freeport).

The girls from Maine Coast Waldorf had the top team score with 762 points, followed closely by Freeport with 760 points.

sassi logo2Fiona Ahearne, with her grandmother cheering her on, earned gold in the 2016 Women's Sassi Memorial Classical at Black Mountain Ski Resort on January 30th. Ahearne, who skis for Maine Coast Waldorf (formerly Merriconeag), finshed the 5K course in 17:16.3 to take the gold.

Junior Sassi LogoCarter McPhedran and Cloe Sisson won the boys and girls 2016 Jr. Sassi 3K Classical at Black Mountain Ski Resort on Januray 30th. McPhedran, skiing for Maranacook, crossed the finish line ahead of the pack in a time of 10:07.2.

EVENT:                                       5km CLASSICAL15 second interval start

SEEDING:                        Coaches to seed skiers as they deem (list J2 seeding separately).

AWARDS:            Awards & U16 team naming will be at approximately 3:15 pm in the Stadium. Racers must be present to win the bib draws.

COACHES MEETING:            9:15 am in the first floor of the timing building (optional).

WAX TESTING:               Wax testing allowed on the course up to 15 minutes before the start. Everyone

            must ski in the direction of the race course.

COURSE                        Spectators and coaches are welcome out on the side of the course during race.

MOVEMENT:                        Coaches must be wearing a coaches bib. All others will require a nordic pass.

                        Skiers must travel in the direction of the race course at all times.            

REGISTRATION:                        Entry fee $10.00 per athlete. Two coaches comp passes per team.

BIB PICK-UP:            Bib pick-up will be in race headquarters upon arrival at Black Mountain. Race headquarters opens at 8:45am. Please return unused bibs prior to the start of the race. $50.00 fee charged for any lost bib.

U16 SELECTION:            This will not be the selection race for the Maine U16 team. The selection race for the U16 and Eastern High school teams will be held at Black Mountain on Saturday, March 5th (U16 – born 2000 or 2001)

This is a chance for Skiers in grades 12 and under from across the State to come together in one great event with a course and venue prepared to a National level. This is the premier event of the season and a great preparation for the State Nordic meet.
